The half second nobody sees

Picture a person standing at the packing bench during the rush. She reaches back for a box, turns around, her eyes sweep the table looking for the tape roll someone left in the wrong spot, she tapes the box, then takes three steps to the next bench to grab a shipping slip, comes back, affixes the slip, and stacks the box in the waiting area. Then she repeats it. And repeats it. About two hundred times a shift.

If you stand and watch her, you will see a busy and skilled person. Her hands are quick, she does not stop, she knows the job. What you almost certainly do not see is the half second she loses each time her eyes hunt for the tape roll. Half a second sounds like nothing. But multiplied by two hundred times a shift, then by the number of shifts in a month, it is no longer half a second. It is hours each month poured into something that creates no value at all for the package, only because a tape roll has no fixed place.

This example is hypothetical, made up to illustrate rather than the data of any specific place. But that half second is real everywhere, in every industry, and most of the time it is invisible. It is invisible because it hides inside the busyness, and because we rarely stop to truly look at a familiar job. This whole article, when it comes down to it, is about learning to see that half second, and about why, in a year when the world has just counted its five millionth industrial robot, the ability to see it matters more than ever.
