What happened?

On September 3, 2025, the U.S. District Court handed down a landmark decision in the Department of Justice’s antitrust case against Alphabet – the parent company of Google. After months of hearings, Judge Amit Mehta ruled that Google had abused its market power in online search and advertising.

The court ordered Google to:

  • Share search data with competitors, instead of keeping it locked away.

  • End certain exclusive contracts with major partners, which had secured Google’s default position on many devices and platforms.

  • Importantly, Google was not forced to divest or spin off Chrome, Android, or its other core products.

This ruling sent shockwaves through the tech world. Online advertising is a multi-hundred-billion-dollar industry, and any structural change to Google’s dominance could reshape the balance of power for years to come.
